Spring Lawn Cleanup Checklist for Carolina Homeowners

Get your lawn and beds ready for the growing season with this simple spring checklist.

When the Carolina winter finally loosens its grip, a little spring prep sets your lawn up for a great season. Here's the checklist we run through.

1. Clear the debris

Rake out leaves, fallen branches and any winter buildup. Matted debris smothers new growth and traps moisture against the crown of the grass.

2. Edge and define the beds

Crisp bed edges are what make a property look cared for. Re-cut your edges before the mulch goes down.

3. Refresh the mulch

A fresh layer of mulch locks in moisture, suppresses weeds and instantly sharpens the whole landscape. Two to three inches is the sweet spot.

4. First mow — a little lower

The first cut of the season can go slightly shorter to clear off dead tips, then raise the height back up as growth takes off.

5. Get ahead of weeds

Early spring is the time for pre-emergent weed control — stopping crabgrass and other weeds before they ever sprout.

6. Plan your lawn health

Book fertilization and, for warm-season lawns, plan your aeration window for later in spring.
